About Skyplanr
Skyplanr is an AI drone mission planner from Apperio AS in Norway: describe the job, and it plans a waypoint mission around your target with laser terrain and obstacle heights, airspace, weather and light, checks it with 89 rule-based checks and sends it straight to DJI Fly. The pilot is always in command.

How we test it
A fixed benchmark for the planner
Six reference jobs, the same every time: a house shoot and a roof inspection in Norway, a field to map, cinematic B-roll at a cliff in Portugal with thinner data, a Dubai villa at dusk, and a brief in plain words. They run through the same planning code as your missions. With the current planner, the median planning time is 6.7 minutes (3.5–10.8 min).
Automated tests for the rules and the files
The validator's rules have their own tests, and the 89 on this site is counted from the validator's code by a test, so the number can't drift from what runs. The DJI Fly mission files are pinned byte for byte, so a code change can't alter what goes into DJI Fly by accident.
In the field
Skyplanr began as the planning tool for our own real-estate drone work in Norway, flown with DJI Fly on an iPhone. After a flight, the import page replays the path from the video subtitles (.SRT) in 3D and checks the photos against the plan: which planned photos were taken, and how far each was from its spot.
Where it works, and why Norway first
The planner works anywhere. How close it plans to things depends on how well the place is measured.
Norway
Kartverket's national laser data at 1 m for terrain, roofs and trees, official geo-zones, the land register for property lines, and MET Norway's forecast for the hour. The validator keeps at least 5 m from buildings and laser-measured obstacles.
Dubai
A Dubai mode planned to the DCAA rules, the 1:1 distance rule and the permits each flight needs. Heights are estimated, so the margins are wider: 10 m above obstacles and 8 m from buildings.
Everywhere else
Open global elevation data and OpenStreetMap buildings. Without laser heights the route stays 30 m above the highest terrain nearby, and close work is left to the pilot.
Why Norway first: it is where we fly, and Kartverket publishes national laser heights in 1 m cells. With measured roofs and treetops, the validator checks a route against what is there rather than an assumption. The other regions get the same rules, with margins sized to their data.
The data, place by placeHow it decides
Three parts, each with its own job. None of them flies the drone.
The planner proposes
An AI planning agent built on Anthropic's Claude models reads the place, the light, the weather and the airspace, writes the shot list and explains each choice: the takeoff, the heights and its assumptions.
The validator flags
A separate program with fixed rules, not a model, runs 89 checks at every waypoint and every 2 m along each leg. Some stop a plan until it is fixed; the others are warnings you read on the mission. Only a plan that passes is saved.
The pilot decides
You are the pilot in command. The checks are advice built from data, not a permission: look at the site, the zones, the NOTAMs and the rules yourself before you lift off.
Editorial note
Our guides link the sources they rely on, such as Kartverket, Luftfartstilsynet (the Norwegian civil aviation authority), the DCAA and DJI's own documentation, and show the date they were last checked. Rules, apps and firmware change; when a guide and the official source disagree, the official source is right.
Everything we publish is advisory, not legal advice. The rules for your flight depend on your drone, your category and the place, and they are yours to check.

Boilerplate
Skyplanr is an AI drone mission planner made by Apperio AS in Mjøndalen, Norway. A pilot describes the job, such as a real-estate shoot, a roof inspection, a mapping grid or cinematic B-roll, and Skyplanr plans a waypoint mission around the target with laser terrain and obstacle heights, airspace, weather and light, checks it with 89 rule-based checks and sends it to DJI Fly. It runs in the browser in English and Norwegian, uses Kartverket's laser data in Norway, plans to the DCAA rules in Dubai and works with open data elsewhere. The free plan includes 3 AI plans a month. More at skyplanr.com.
